At Least 30 Persons Killed in Gunmen Attack in Northern Nigeria
The latest occurrences in a region plagued by violent conflict in Nigeria saw gunmen kill at least 30 people and kidnap a number of children in separate attacks in three northern states, according to police and locals.
Armed motorcycle gangs frequently take advantage of the region’s understaffed security personnel by abducting local residents, commuters, and students and holding them for ransom.
Residents claimed that on Saturday, armed men raided the villages of Janbako and Sakkida in northwest Zamfara state, murdering 24 people. Additionally, the gunmen kidnapped a number of kids who were gathering firewood in a nearby forest in the Gora village.
The local government of Tangaza in the neighboring state of Sokoto was also assaulted on Saturday, according to police spokesperson Ahmad Rufai, and the victims were laid to rest on Sunday.
Locals in Janbako and Sakkida, Hussaini Ahmadu and Abubakar Maradun, told Reuters over the phone that the gangs had earlier in the week asked that locals pay a fee to allow them to cultivate their fields, but the villagers had refused to do so.
Yazid Abubakar, a spokesman for the Zamfara police, confirmed the attacks but noted that only 13 fatalities and nine kidnappings of children had been reported.
In a raid on the Imande Mbakange hamlet in north central Benue state on Saturday, gunmen killed 25 people and burned their homes on fire, according to two residents. The attack’s motivation was unknown.
