Nigeria's Presidential Election Tribunal Continues Hearing Cases Against Tinubu's Victory

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, which is sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, will resume hearing the cases challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential election on Tuesday, June 11.

The tribunal has consolidated the petitions filed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) against the president-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The tribunal has given Obi three weeks to present his case, starting from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, June 23. Obi is alleging that Tinubu was not qualified to contest the election and that there were irregularities and malpractices in the conduct of the poll.

The tribunal has also given Tinubu and INEC five days to defend their victory and respond to the allegations made by the petitioners.

The tribunal had earlier dismissed the petitions filed by Solomon Okangbuan of the Action Alliance (AA) and Chichi Ojei of the Action Peoples Party (APP) for lack of merit.

Tinubu was declared the winner of the election by INEC after he polled 8,794,726 votes, defeating his closest rival, Atiku, who got 6,984,520 votes. Obi came third with 6,101,533 votes.

The petitioners are seeking to nullify Tinubu's victory and order a fresh election or declare them as the rightful winners of the election.

The tribunal is expected to deliver its judgment within 180 days from the date of filing the petitions.
