Tinubu Swears in Senator George Akume as the SGF
Tinubu has sworn in Senator George Akume as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This happened on Wednesday the 6th of June 2023 at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event was witnessed by many top dignitaries including former and serving governors.
The SGF Is a senior government official who plays a vital role in the executive arm of government. The SGF is responsible for ensuring the effective coordination and monitoring of the implementation of government policies and programmes. Some of the responsibilities of the SGF include:
- Coordinating and supervising the activities of various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) of the government.
- Providing advice and guidance to the President and the Cabinet on policy matters and ensuring the implementation of government policies.
- Organizing and coordinating the meetings of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the highest decision-making body of the government.
- Promoting coordination among different ministries and agencies to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure efficient resource utilization.
- Overseeing the recruitment, training, and management of civil servants at the federal level. They maintain discipline, ensure compliance with rules and regulations, and promote professionalism within the civil service.
- Playing a crucial role in organizing official ceremonies, state functions, and managing protocol matters.
- Working closely with security agencies and stakeholders to address security challenges and manage emergency situations.
The previous SGF was Boss Gida Mustapha, who served from November 1, 2017 to May 29, 2023. He was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari and succeeded Babachir David Lawal, who was sacked over corruption allegations.
Senator George Akume served as minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2019 to 2023. He was also a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 2007 to 2019, and the Governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007.
He belongs to the All Progressives Congress (APC) party and hails from Wannune Tarka Council Area in Benue State. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in Labour Relations from the University of Ibadan. He is married to Mrs. Regina Akume.
He is the 20th SGF in the history of Nigeria.
